Application Procedures for Grade 9 2017-2018
All applicants to the IB Preparatory programme must complete an application process including: a Mathematics Entrance Test, a 500 word application essay, and submission of copies of final Grade 7 and interim Grade 8 report cards. The results of the test, together with the essay and report cards, will be used to determine eligibility of the applicant to be interviewed for the IB Prep Programme.
The Math test for 2017-2018 entry was held on November 29th. Emails will be sent to all students who wrote the test starting December 1st.
Mathematics Entrance Test Details
Our Math Entrance Test is based on the Grade 7/8 Ontario Curriculum and is similar to a Gauss test. Please visit the CEMC site for appropriate practice tests. Students are expected to achieve a minimum of 70% on the test, demonstrating “at grade level” results. Please note that the test is one hour in length, and that use of a non-programmable, non-graphing calculator is permitted. Please bring your own calculator, eraser and non-mechanical pencil. No other items, with the exception of water bottles, will be permitted in the test rooms. Please leave cell phones and other electronic devices at home.
Each applicant to the IB Preparatory programme must submit a hard copy of their application essay at the time of their Math Test. The topic of the essay is: “Why I am right for the IB programme and why it is right for me.” Applicants should read the information about the IB Learner Profile and the IB Diploma Programme to see what qualities are fostered in IB and the overall aims of the IB programme . Essays should include specific examples of the applicant’s activities and achievements in the context of at least 3 IB Learner Profile attributes. The length of the essay is 500 words, no longer. Essays may be typed or neatly handwritten. Please include applicant name (last, first) and TDSB number (if applicable) in the upper right corner of the front page. Title pages are not required.
Report Cards (copies)
All applicants must submit photocopies of their Grade 7 final and Grade 8 interim report cards, including all pages and subjects, at the time of their Math Test. It is expected that applicants will have achieved 80% or higher (Level 4) in all subjects in Grade 7, and that Learning Skills on both report cards should be at the “Excellent” level. Report card copies and essays will not be returned.
Please do not bring any other documents to the Math Test. Essays and report card copies only. Thank you.
Based on the results of the above submissions, students may be invited for an interview. Applicants will be notified via email if they have been selected for a family interview. Please do not telephone the school regarding an interview unless instructed by email to do so.
Interviews will be scheduled during December and January weekdays between 9:00 and 2:45 only. No interviews will be scheduled during the Winter Holiday – Dec. 23-Jan. 9 inclusive. Applicants must attend the interview with a parent or official guardian. Do not bring siblings. At the interview, the applicant will be expected to discuss the content of his/her essay in detail, academic and other interests, and any plans for the future. Tous les candidats doivent avoir une conversation en Français au niveau approprié de grade (7/8) lors de l’entrevue. All required Victoria Park and TDSB forms and personal documents must be brought to the interview.
